This vide-poche depicts a whelk (Buccin) beside a strand of fucus, the brown algae traditionally harvested along the Breton coast. Such gathering was historically undertaken by goémoniers, laborers who collected seaweed—often by donkey cart—for use as fuel or fertilizer, a theme that also appealed to Realist painters for its evocation of regional labor and custom. The whelk, which naturally grazes on organisms living among seaweed, underscores the ecological specificity of the scene. Rendered in pâte de verre and tinted with cobalt oxide, the glass evokes a shallow pool of seawater settled into a sandy depression, within which the whelk and fucus appear beached.
