In this Établissement Gallé cameo glass vase, the calla lily’s flowers and leaves spiral in a diagonal whirlpool of movement, their ruffled edges and finely traced venation articulated through parallel lines that sweep around the vessel. The lilies are modeled in two distinct layers of colored glass, each carefully cut to different depths to achieve subtle tonal gradations. The first layer, a safranée glass, brings forth a warm yellow-orange radiance. The vase was then cased in subsequent layers of yellow and green glass, which were cut back so that the lilies themselves are rendered in yellow glass and the leaves in green.
