These “Wisteria” chairs by Louis Majorelle reinterpret the traditional Windsor form through the lens of French Art Nouveau craftsmanship. The backs feature exquisite marquetry panels depicting cascading wisteria blooms in dark walnut, their flowing stems embodying the organic rhythm characteristic of Majorelle’s work. The carved swan-head arms allude to the piano Majorelle created with Victor Prouvé in 1903 as a tribute to his mentor, Émile Gallé—an homage inspired by Plato’s account of Socrates’ death in the Phaedo, where the philosopher likens his final words to the swan’s joyful song before rebirth. The legs, ending in elegant Queen Anne–style trifid feet, and the lustrous Macassar ebony side rails further demonstrate Majorelle’s ability to merge naturalistic ornament with refined historical form.
