In this stunning example of Bugatti’s early work, a cow lifts its head, lowing loudly while a bull stoops down to graze. Much of Bugatti’s early work used domesticated animals as subject matter, i.e cows, sheep, dogs. Bugatti produced this work in his hometown of Pavia, in the south of Milan where cattle roamed freely on Mount Mesima. Bugatti went on trips his uncle, Giovanni Segantini where they observed the cattle farmers of the Engadine mountains in Switzerland. The pastoral town served as a meeting place for great minds such as Rilke, Freud, Giacometti, Nietzsche, Rodin, and Klimt.
